Cappadocia, Turkey; 13 & 14 October 2015
Safety has been identified as a key issue in the CSI's first Agenda for Actions in 2002 and it remains at the heart of our concerns ever since. Members understand that safety is not a competitive topic and are keen to learn from each other so the sector can improve its performance together. Though notable improvements were achieved in the number of fatalities of direct employees in the past years, the sector is far from being satisfied with its overall performance, as the CSI is aiming for "Achieving zero harm for your workforce, contractors & communities". Safety for all covers more than just employees and contractors. CSI members are committed to ensuring a healthy and safe environment to everyone working in and interacting with cement operations.
With that goal in mind, the CSI organized its 9th annual forum in Cappadocia, Turkey, focusing on discussion around employee safety and health management. Hosted by Çimsa Cement, the 2-day event received almost 90 guests from different parts of the world. Apart from CSI members, government officials, international & local NGOs, H&S consultants & academics, joined this pursuit together in raising the bar of H&S performance for the sector. The event provided an open platform for dicussion about how to incorporate the established thoughts about safety for shifting employee behavior, revising the managerial system, improving the communication with external shareholders into the DNA of the company culture.
Dr. Serhat Ayrım, Deputy Secretary of Ministry Labour and Social Security in Turkey made the official remarks after the opening by Ms. Nevra Özhatay, General Manager of Çimsa and Mr. Philippe Fonta, Managing Director of WBCSD-CSI. Presentations by more than 30 speakers tackled the best practices in occupational health and safety, changing conditions and technological developments. Member companies were able to review the industry and the solutions of development areas together.
Apart from the fourm meeting, a technical site visit was arranged in one of Çimsa's cement plant in Kayseri, which was awarded as “the Cleanest Industrial Plant in Turkey” in 2012 and deemed worthy of many “Occupational Health and Safety Performance Award” by the Turkish Association of Cement Industry Employers.
