External verification on compliance with the CSI Charter

Member companies of the CSI all signed the CSI Charter when joining, thus committing to fulfil the prescribed membership requirements, implement the guidelines and report on the key performance indicators (KPIs) as defined in the document.

To monitor progress against these commitments, internal checking is carried out annually via a self-assessment questionnaire. In addition, a CSI-coordinated audit takes place every 4 years or when there is a major change in the CSI Charter. The most recent exercise was carried out in 2014, when 17 member companies were audited against the CSI Charter commitments.

In the 2014 audit exercise, an independent auditor was appointed to carry out external verification of the Charter commitments implementation in 7 key areas:

  1. CO2 emissions and energy management
  2. Fuels and material use
  3. Health and safety
  4. Emissions monitoring and reporting
  5. Local impact on land and communities
  6. Reporting and communications
  7. Governance
TThe auditing process involved interview meetings at corporate level and site visits when needed. Through evaluation of evidence provided, the auditor produced a report gathering aggregated results to the CSI and individualed reports for audited companies. In the future, a similar exercise will be repeated to monitor trends in progress and to identify the global added value of the CSI collaborative approach for its members.
 

Why is this important for the CSI and its members?

"What gets measured gets done" - The exercise enables the CSI to assess the strengths and weaknesses of our Charter while setting the agenda going forward. It provides members with a view of what can be done to define and ensure commitments..

  • In all areas, at least one company scored 100% in implementing its commitments, although no member achieved perfect scores in every area. This reflects the robustness of the audit process as well as the relevance of the CSI Charter and its ambitious, yet achievable, requirements.

  • Members found the exercise helpful for driving internal improvement. Respondents were well-prepared for the audit interview, with evidence mostly well-organized and readily available. Through the exercise, companies gained an external, independent view for driving internal reflection required to review and adjust their implementation strategy.

  • Geographical location is less relevant whilst the duration of CSI membership shows more impact. Long-standing member companies (CSI Core Members) who are more active in the CSI generally received higher score over average, reflecting the added value of membership through offering a collaborative platform and developing roadmaps for improving performance across the board.

  • Application of CSI indicators to track and benchmark company's performance with CSI average to drive individual improvements. Member companies promote high transparency in communication and robustness in reporting.
