Applications of the GNR system

The GNR system is intended to help the cement industry and policymakers alike better assess the influence of kiln technology, fuel selection, plant location and other variables on global and regional plant performance and emissions management.

Data is collected by GNR system participants for the database using the CSI-developed CO2 Accounting and Reporting Standard for the Cement Industry. This ensures consistency in both data input and analysis, and hence reliable and broadly applicable output.

A current, representative and robust GNR system would be fundamental in providing a sound analytical basis for any future assessment of performance-based benchmarks for the cement industry. For instance, in the assessing and setting of intensity-based benchmarked targets in a sectoral market mechanism (see Sectoral Approaches).

The CSI has designed the GNR system as an open platform to encourage organizations globally to join and participate, contributing data in order to build the broadest dataset for analysis and use.
